Medieval Manors
At the time nobles controlled pieces of land given to them from the king. On their land they had a manor where the noble and his people lived. Manors consisted of a castle, a church, a village where the workers lived, and the surrounding farmland. Manors were self-sufficient which means they provided themselves with whatever they need. The amount of land the noble owned showed how much wealth he had. Since the noble owned so much land he would have peasants farm the land and make food. Peasants were tied to the land they lived on so they could not leave. Peasants lived in very small rundown houses while nobles lived in castles. This type of living lasted for a very long time until Europe became a safer place and people began to travel. |
