Medieval Food
Most people at the time ate bread. Peasants grew food for themselves. They ate rye or barley bread because only the rich could afford to have white bread. Peasants had to pay to use the lords ovens. The noble did not want to make more money so he did not allow the peasants to have an oven in their home.
The main source of meat was from pigs. They also ate mutton from sheep. Peasants were not allowed to hunt deer, wild boar, hares, or rabbits. The were considered property of the lord. If your were caught killing any of the animals your could have your hands cut off. They also ate black pudding (blood, milk, animal fat, onions, and oatmeal). Learn more about food here. |
